Bring something to read
One button, one field. Piper works out what you gave it — a link, a file, or a title you typed — and does the right thing with it.
Start in the same place every time
Open your Library and press Import Source. Everything below begins there.
Paste a link
Paste an article URL and press ↵. Piper fetches the page, strips it back to the text, and files it. Desktop only — the web app cannot fetch pages for you.
Or just type
Type anything that isn't a link and Piper saves it as a stub — a titled placeholder for a physical book or something you haven't got yet.
Books
Drag and drop or pick a file. Imports keep running if you navigate away — a notification brings you back when the book is ready. In the web app, EPUBs need to be under 100 MB; the desktop app has no such limit.
Web articles
Paste a URL and Piper pulls the readable text. If a page renders entirely in JavaScript, the desktop app falls back to loading it in a real sandboxed browser and trying again. Some sites — social feeds especially — still resist.
Things you don't have a file for
A paperback, a lecture, a book you have only heard about. Type a title, save it, and it's in your library — linkable straight away. Import the real thing later and it fills in place, keeping every link you already made to it.
Something you're working through
Choose Start a course instead of saving, and you get an ordered container to hang sources off as you go. Courses take notes and links of their own.
What Piper can't take yet
Piper is in private beta, and the import surface is narrower than it will be. It's worth knowing the edges before you plan a migration around it.
PDFs are not importable yet. EPUB is the only file format the importer accepts today. If your material is a PDF, a stub source will hold its place — with your notes and links attached — until PDF support lands.
URL import needs the desktop app. The web app can take files and stubs, but it cannot fetch a page on your behalf. Paste a link there and Piper will say so rather than fail quietly.
There's no browser extension.Saving from the page you're on means copying the URL for now. An extension is planned, not built.
Pages behind a login can't be fetched. Anything requiring you to be signed in — paywalled articles, private documents — will report that it needs authentication, which Piper does not do yet.
