3. Why forgetting helps

Forgetting has a poor reputation. Wetreat it as leakage, a failure of thecontainer. But the curve tells anotherstory once you look at what happenson the second encounter.

Forgetting isn’t the enemy of learning.It’s the setup for it. Each lapse givesthe next return something to do.Retrieval is a rebuild, not a readout.

In the classic studies, learners whowaited a day before reviewing didworse at first, and far better a weeklater.

The effort of retrieval, the slightstruggle to bring an idea back, is whatstrengthens the trace. Easy recallteaches little; effortful recallteaches a great deal.
