What is decided
Not the numbers. What is decided is the line between free and paid, and that line is the part worth knowing: Piper charges when it costs us money to run. Reading, writing, and linking on your own machine cost us nothing, so they are free permanently rather than free for now.
Sync and Intelligence both need a server, and there is no server yet. The prices are here early so they are on the record before there is any incentive to move them. When that day comes, the free tier does not shrink: nothing that works today moves behind a subscription later.
What you get without paying anything
The whole app as it stands: your library, the reader, annotations, the notebook, courses, and search across all of it — in a vault you own, with no account and no expiry. The connection graph and spaced review are on desktop today, with mobile catching up. See the roadmap for what is coming and what's new for what already arrived.
